Villager Construction Tackles Route 31 Challenges in NY →

In Palmyra, NY, on Route 31 a project has been under way to reconstruct a 1.9-mi. (3.1 km) section of the town from the Macedon town line in the west to the bridge which spans the Erie Canal in the east. The $7.5-million project includes installing a new water main as well as new storm and sewer lines. From Construction Equipment Guide... During the summer, crowds headed to the Sandwich Early Day Engine Show. While mostly a tractor show, industrial machinery also was on display along with engines and toys. The show drew a large crowd to this Northern Illinois town known for the Sandwich engines it once produced. One rather unusual piece of equipment on display was Paul Furar’s 1930 Toro Junior 13-30 truck. From Construction Equipment Guide... An Intermodal Transportation Complex soon will open its doors for travelers in Erie, PA. Managed by the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, the bayfront building will serve as a hub for passengers of Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority buses and eventually Greyhound buses. In addition, the complex will feature services for taxicabs, cruise boats, ferryboats and even bicycles. A trafficway that serves vehicles entering and leaving uptown Charlotte is being sliced open to receive a new storm drain — and Link-Belt equipment is entrusted with key parts of the job. “I’m a very big Link-Belt fan,” said John Pike, superintendent of Sealand Contractors Corp. Pike and his Sealand crew are performing major street surgery on .7 of a mile (1.1 km) of Central Avenue, which carries traffic southeast out of the city toward Mint Hill. Work is well under way on a spectacular office tower that will be only the second building constructed in the area in more than a decade. From Construction Equipment Guide... Komatsu America Corporation (KAC), held the grand opening of its Newberry Manufacturing Operation (NMO) in Newberry, SC, on May 29, 2002. The $20-million facility is the new home for production of four Komatsu backhoe loaders including the WB140-2N, WB140PS, WB150-2N and the WB150PS. Located 35 mi. northwest of Columbia, SC, the NMO facility is set on 80 acres (32 ha). Fast-Track Project Speeds Trolleys Back to Scranton, PA →

The $1.1-million job just completed on Stafford Avenue in Scranton, PA, will not only replace a bridge that was demolished more than a decade ago — thereby restoring the Laurel Line rail link from Scranton to Montage, PA — but also it was a project that was designed and built very quickly. In fact, according to Dave Krisanda, community relations coordinator of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 4, the project “went from the conceptual stage to the final design and project delivery in only four months.” The Project’s History Pat McCabe, PennDOT senior project construction manager, described the background to this unusual undertaking. “In 1988, a wooden deck highway bridge over a then abandoned railway line was removed and backfilled to avoid the cost of a new bridge,” he began.  Click for more...
